Estate Assessment

Know what you run before you plan the move.

OpenEdge Estate and Upgrade Readiness Assessment

An upgrade plan is only as good as the inventory under it. The assessment is a short, structured review of your Progress OpenEdge estate that ends in a document you can take to a budget meeting.

What we look at

  • Release and lifecycle position. Which OpenEdge release each environment runs, where it sits in Progress's published product lifecycle, and which supported long-term support release is the sensible target.
  • The database. Schema, areas and extents, Type I versus Type II storage areas, sizing and growth, index health, before-image and after-image configuration, and the backup routine actually in use.
  • Application server topology. Classic AppServer, WebSpeed or PASOE, how agents are configured, and what talks to them.
  • Clients. Character (CHUI), GUI for .NET, WebSpeed pages, and anything else that connects, with the count of screens or programs in each.
  • Customizations. Where the code departs from your ISV or ERP baseline, and how much of it would need retesting after a version change.
  • Build and deployment. How source is stored, compiled and moved between environments, and whether r-code can be rebuilt from source today.
  • Integration points. File drops, ODBC or JDBC readers, REST or SOAP services, reporting tools and anything else that would notice a change.

What you receive

  1. A written findings document describing the estate as it is, in plain language.
  2. A risk register for the version conversion: each risk, how likely and how costly it is, and how it would be rehearsed or mitigated.
  3. A sequenced plan for the upgrade or modernization, with effort ranges and the order of work, including what can wait.

How it runs

We work from read access to a non-production copy wherever possible, interviews with your developer and DBA, and the database and server configuration files. Production access is not required to produce the plan. The assessment is billed hourly like every engagement, and its size depends on the number of databases, environments and applications in scope.

If the answer is that the estate needs less work than you feared, the document will say so.
