OpenEdge Services
Four ways in, depending on where the estate is today.
The work, in the order most estates need it
Most Progress OpenEdge estates we hear about have the same shape: an application written in ABL over twenty or thirty years, an OpenEdge database that has grown with it, one or two people who still know how it all fits together, and a release that is older than anyone would like. The services below follow that shape. Many clients start with the assessment and then move down the list; some only need one rung.
Estate and Upgrade Readiness Assessment
A short, structured review of the whole estate: release and lifecycle position, database schema, storage areas and sizing, AppServer or PASOE topology, client types, customizations against your vendor's baseline, build and deployment, and integration points. The output is a written findings document, a risk register for the version conversion, and a sequenced plan with effort ranges.
Version Upgrade and Database Migration
Executing the move from a retired or sunsetting release to a supported long-term support release. Database conversion with rehearsal runs and a rollback plan, Type II storage-area restructuring, index and schema cleanup, recompiles and runtime fixes, classic AppServer to PASOE, client and deployment changes, performance validation against a baseline, and a cutover runbook your team can execute.
ABL Application Modernization
Incremental change to the application while it stays in production: ABL business logic exposed as REST services, CHUI or fat-client screens replaced a module at a time, object-oriented refactoring of the worst-coupled code, characterization tests around critical logic, source control and CI for ABL builds, and feeds from the OpenEdge database into reporting or warehouse targets.
OpenEdge Support and Staff Augmentation
Ongoing senior cover: database administration and performance tuning, after-incident analysis, backup and recovery validation, service-pack and LTS planning, ABL development capacity alongside your developer, and documented handover where the original authors have left.
How engagements are billed
Every engagement is hourly time and materials, delivered by senior US engineers as a project or as staff augmentation. Scope, staffing and timeline are agreed in an initial conversation; nothing on this site is a fixed-price package.
